HYROX has grown massively over the last few years and a question we often get in-store at The Sports Room is: “What running shoes can I wear for HYROX?”
The short answer? There’s no single “perfect” HYROX shoe - it really comes down to personal preference. But there are some key features that make certain running shoes much better suited to the demands of a HYROX race.
HYROX is a mix of running and strength-based stations, so your shoe needs to perform well in both. Here’s what we look for:
1. Underfoot feel
Most HYROX-friendly shoes combine responsive foam with a plate (carbon, TPU, or nylon). This helps with efficiency on the runs while still offering support during workouts.
2. Grip
This is non-negotiable. If the outsole rubber isn’t grippy, it’s no good - especially for sled pushes, lunges and fast direction changes.
3. Stability
You need a shoe that feels stable not just running forward but also during lateral and medial movement at the workout stations.
A lot of HYROX shoe choices lean towards plated running shoes, but which type works best depends on what you prefer:
Some people love a softer, highly cushioned ride with big energy return and a stiffer carbon plate
Others prefer less stack height, firmer cushioning, and a more flexible TPU or nylon plate
There’s no right or wrong here - it’s all about how the shoe feels on your foot and how confident you feel moving in it.
Saucony Endorphin Pro 4 – particularly strong grip and a fast, responsive feel
ASICS Magic Speed 5 – a more stable option that works well through the stations
New Balance SuperComp Trainer – maximum cushioning for those who want protection and comfort
Saucony Endorphin Speed 4 or 5 – high grip, stable, and very versatile
HOKA Mach X 3 – energetic foam with a smooth, controlled ride
Brooks Hyperion Max – more cushioning with a stable platform
If you’re not keen on plates at all, there are still solid options worth considering:
Saucony Azura – great value and very capable
HOKA Mach 6 – lightweight, responsive, and versatile
Choosing a HYROX shoe really comes down to trying them on and seeing which foam and plate combination suits your body, movement and race goals. What works brilliantly for one athlete might feel completely wrong for another.
If you’re unsure, pop into the shop and we’ll help you work through the options and find the shoe that best matches your needs - both on the run and on the floor.
