If you’re looking for a perfect mix of sea air, scenic trails, and a dash of history, Wicklow Town is hard to beat. Just hop on the train and step straight into a hiker’s paradise. Whether you’re here for a leisurely stroll or a more adventurous trail walk, there’s a route for every pace - and every pair of grippy, waterproof hiking shoes will serve you well here.
Once you step off the train, look for the little lane marked “River Walk.” This charming riverside trail leads you into the heart of town, winding along the water’s edge. Keep an eye out for otters, kingfishers, and herons - proof that a slow wander can be just as rewarding as a long trek! From here, it’s easy to access the sea front, so make sure your shoes are ready for a mix of surfaces.
A longer option starts from Greystones. Hop off the DART and follow the coastal path all the way to Wicklow - about a 2 hour 45 minute walk. As you approach Wicklow Town, the stretch known as The Murrough is a birdwatcher’s delight, and further inland, the Broad Lough trail offers peaceful views of Tinakilly House. (Just cross over the railway tracks via the turnstile). With wet grass and gravel underfoot, waterproof trail shoes make all the difference in keeping you comfortable from start to finish.
For something more iconic, take the Cliff Walk, one of Wicklow’s best-known trails. The coastal path can get slippy after rain, so reliable grip and ankle support are essential. Keep an eye out for seals basking offshore as you head towards the lighthouses before looping back for a well-earned lunch in town.
Or, if you prefer a quieter escape, follow the paths behind the Dominican Convent. Hidden lanes lead to tranquil fields, wooded sections, and a soothing brook - perfect for clearing the head and testing your trail shoes’ comfort and stability on a shorter walk. (Head for the lane after the hockey pitch at the top of Dunbur Park and look for a rope in the hedgerows!).
If you're visiting between Easter and September complete your visit with the Wicklow Town Heritage Trail, where local history comes alive every Saturday. Wander past the ruins of the Black Castle, said to be near where St. Patrick first landed and find out more about the history of the Vikings, Wicklow Gaol and more. Wherever you explore, make sure your feet are prepared - grippy, waterproof, and supportive hiking shoes from The Sports Room will help you make the most of every step in Wicklow’s great outdoors!
