Kimu - A New Bike For Kids From Orbea

Kimu - A New Bike For Kids From Orbea

If you want your child to feel confident riding a bike, take a look at the new Kimu range from Orbea. What's great about the Kimu bikes is that they are designed, specifically for kids, to deliver safety and control from the very beginning. Perfect for practising stability and skill on Wicklow's new pump track.

Used by our own family

Most of our children learned to cycle on an Orbea bike. We didn't have the shop when DD1 started cycling. She began with stabilisers. Big mistake. Relying on the extra support made cycling on two wheels all the more tricky for her. DS1, however, started on an Orbea balance bike. He quickly got a real feel for it and in no time his feet were off the ground. The funny thing was, when he moved to the next size and started cycling on his own, we actually missed the moment - one of the neighbours came running in to tell us!

Built to last

Orbea junior bikes are long lasting. Our bikes went back and forth between Enda's and our house, so six kids and then onto the cousins. I've no doubt they've been passed on again. The new Kimu range is also built to last. Orbea's reputation for quality and durability means Kimu is ready for the knocks and falls that come with being a child.

Designed for kids

The Orbea KIMU range is designed specifically for kids. It offers adapted ergonomics, lightweight components and geometry tailored to a natural riding position. Smaller-diameter handlebars, grips sized for small hands, short cranks and dedicated saddles reflect the care placed into every detail.

As your child grows and becomes more confident on the bike, Kimu offers two categories tailored to each age, size and stage: Learning and Development.

Kimu 16: Learning (Aged 3 - 6)

Start the child off on a balance bike and once they feel stable, they can learn to use the brakes. Once they understand how to use the brake levers, pop on the pedals. What began life as a foot support, converts into cranks and pedals. A longer seatpost extends the usable life of the bike. Like many of Orbea's bikes,

Kimu 20, 24 and 27: Development

The numbers refer to the wheel size and each is targeted to a different age:

Each model is built with different characteristics and price points:

  • Kimu 20 H10 and Kimu 24 H10 focus on maximum lightness with premium components.
  • Kimu 20 H20 and Kimu 24 H20 strike the balance between fun and performance, offering the ideal package for skill development thanks to their aluminium fork and stable handling.
  • Kimu 24 H10 TR, Kimu 27 H10 and Kimu 27 H20 open the door to trail riding with MTB components such as suspension forks and dropper posts.

Designed with kids in mind, the Kimu bikes have a low bike-to-rider weight ratio making them easy to handle. Short cranks, adapted grips and saddles and short-throw shifts make it easy to use the gears. Hydraulic brakes are safe and easy to manage. Wheels are proportionally larger as this provides greater inertia and stability, helping riders maintain speed smoothly and confidently. The larger diameter improves traction and encourages skill development on more technical terrain.

And there's more

Aluminum frames, internal cable routing and dedicated protectors keep the bike quiet and in excellent condition despite heavy use. Short rear derailleurs remain well protected while allowing enough clearance to avoid impacts with curbs or rocks. In addition, all Kimu models in this category incorporate a revolutionary stem that grows with the rider, ensuring optimal fit throughout the bike’s lifespan.

All Kimu models are customisable. They include two sets of interchangeable protectors with dedicated designs. In addition, Kimu 20, like Kimu 16, comes with stickers to personalise the bike along with a name plate to make it truly their own.

In Basque, where the Orbea factory is located, Kimu means "shoot" or "bud" - a symbol of new beginnings. Without a doubt, an Orbea junior bike will give your child a burst of confidence and a great start to a lifelong journey on two wheels. Thinking about a new bike for your child this year?
