There’s a lot to be said for shopping somewhere people know their stuff, recognise your face and genuinely appreciate you coming through the door.
Wicklow Town has plenty of those places. Family-owned shops with their own personalities, knowledgeable teams and people behind the counter who are part of the community, not just passing through it.
With the 2026 Wicklow Chamber Business Awards coming up, we wanted to give a nod to some fellow nominees. Yes, we’d love your vote for The Sports Room. But we’re in very good company, and that deserves a little attention too.
Take a look at the other finalists for 2026:
Bridge Street Books
No stranger to awards, this family-run book shop has won the An Post Bookshop of the Year (2022), The Irish Times Bookshop of the Year (2014) and the Bord Gais Energy Bookshop of the Year (2012). What I love about this shop is that Hilary and Joanna always seem to know what I like to read and their recommendations are spot on.
The Shoe Box
It's many a child of ours that has got their new school shoes here! But that's not the only string to their bow - kids' shoes and clothing, ladies shoes, clothing and accessories.
Hopkins Toymaster
For birthdays, Christmas lists and any day gifts - you could spend hours in here! Always a good spot for picking up things for our window displays too. Did you know this business has been here since 1827?
Gelletlie Jewellers
Going in here - it's like stepping into the past. On Wicklow Main Street since 1818, I love to imagine the people who used to go there for that perfect purchase to mark a moment.
Wardrobe Boutique
Celebrating 35 years in business, I've picked up plenty of bits here over the years! A perfect local shop for a browse, a wardrobe refresh and a little help finding something that feels like you.
The Sports Room
And then there’s us. Running shoes, bikes, swim kit and plenty of conversations about what you’re training for next. We love helping people find gear that suits what they actually do, whether that’s their first few kilometres or the next big challenge.
We’re delighted to be finalists for Best Retail and Best Sustainability, Governance & Environmental at this year’s awards. More than anything, we’re grateful to the customers who put us forward.
These are family-owned businesses, with real people and families behind them. People who work here, shop here and care about how Wicklow Town is doing. This is just a selection of what Wicklow Town has to offer. Some more of my favourite shops include:
Supporting local doesn’t have to mean buying everything on your doorstep. It might mean checking in town first, picking up a birthday present locally or recommending a shop after a good experience.
And if you’re not buying today? A review, a kind word or telling a friend about a great local business helps too.
A town centre full of independent shops is something worth keeping. Preferably by calling in, rather than just saying how lovely it is to have them.
We’re proud to be nominated alongside these businesses. If you’ve had a great experience with any of us, this is a lovely opportunity to show your support. Need a reminder of why you might vote for us? Have a read of our Trustpilot or Google reviews. Our customers make a better case for us than we could ourselves.
Voting closes on 13 November, with winners announced on 28 November.
