Summer Training Guide: Running, Cycling & Swimming in Wicklow

Summer is Here - Train Like It

Wicklow is one of Ireland's finest playgrounds for endurance sport. From the granite peaks of the Wicklow Mountains to the open waters from Bray to Arklow summer brings long evenings, dry trails and the perfect conditions to push your training to the next level. Whether you're building towards a triathlon, a trail race, or simply making the most of the season, this guide covers the best routes and the gear you need to do it right.

Running Wicklow

Top Routes

  • Wicklow Way (Marlay to Clonegal): Ireland's most iconic long-distance trail. Perfect for long runs and back-to-back training days.
  • Glendalough Valley Loop: A classic 10–14km loop with stunning lake views - ideal for tempo runs and trail intervals.
  • Powerscourt Waterfall Loop: A moderate 8km trail with elevation - excellent for building hill strength.
  • Mark's Route This Week: A favourite route of Mark's is a trail run around Devil's Glen. You can't beat the scenery and the forest floor is technical enough to keep his interest. The elevation is a good workout too.

Gear Recommendations

For road running in Wicklow, you need a shoe that handles both tarmac and light gravel. For trail and mountain terrain, grip and protection are non-negotiable.

Tip: Even though we're all basking in a heatwave right now, summer in Wicklow can still mean rain. A lightweight packable jacket is always worth throwing in your vest.

Cycling Wicklow

Top Routes

  • The Wicklow Gap: A legendary climb from Hollywood to Glendalough - a must-do for any road cyclist in Ireland.
  • Sally Gap Loop: A 60–80km loop from Dublin taking in some of the most dramatic bog and mountain scenery in the country.
  • Avoca Valley Road: A quieter, rolling route through the Vale of Avoca - great for tempo efforts and group rides.
  • Blessington Lakes Circuit: A flat-to-rolling 40km loop - ideal for time trial training or brick sessions.
  • Mark's Route This Week: From Wicklow Town, he headed out on his Orbea towards the Roundwood Lakes and back home via Glen of the Downs and onto the back roads towards Hunter's Hotel.

Gear Recommendations

Summer cycling in Wicklow calls for lightweight, breathable kit - but always pack for the unexpected shower.

Tip: Overshoes are worth carrying on any Wicklow climb — the temperature drops fast above 400m even in July.

Swimming Wicklow

Top Spots

  • Bray Beach: A popular open water swim spot with easy access and a strong local swimming community.
  • Greystones Harbour & Surrounds: Sheltered and ideal for open water beginners or early morning swims.
  • Brittas Bay: One of Ireland's finest beaches — perfect for longer open water sessions in summer.
  • Lough Dan: A stunning mountain lake for the more adventurous swimmer - cold, clear, and unforgettable.
  • Ciara's Top Spots: The Murrough Wicklow Town, Glen Beach Wicklow Town - it's like Greece here on a sunny day!

Gear Recommendations

Irish open water is cold even in summer - a good wetsuit is essential if you're swimming long distance, not optional.

Tip: Water temperatures in Wicklow peak at around 16–18°C in July and August. A 3:2mm or 4:3mm wetsuit is recommended for open water swims over 30 minutes.

Fuelling Your Summer Training

Whatever your sport, nutrition is the foundation of consistent training. Summer heat increases sweat rate and electrolyte loss - don't underestimate your fuelling needs.
